Raccoons are animals that appear in the Jungle Bunch universe.
Description[]
The Raccoon (Procyon lotor) is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The English word "Raccoon" came from the Powhatan term aroughcun which is a reflex of a Proto-Algonquian root "ahrah-koon-em". In other languages it is named after its characteristic dousing behavior in other languages like in German "Waschbar"(wash-bear), and in Danish "Vaskebjorn". The raccoon is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 5 to 26 kg (11 to 57 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur which insulates it against cold weather. Three of the raccoon's most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws, its facial mask, and its ringed tail, which are themes in the mythologies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.
Physical Characteristics[]
Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for at least three years. They are usually nocturnal and omnivorous, eating about 40% invertebrates, 33% plants, and 27% vertebrates. They are extremely intelligent and adaptable animals, enabling them to live expertly in both wild and urban environments. They are social animals, tending to live in a group of around four individuals.
The Raccoon is omnivorous but prefers as meat foods invertebrates, insects, worms and Larvae as well as small aquatic animals: freshwater clams, mussels, crayfish, fish, frogs, turtles, amphibians and oysters. It also attacks small mammals (muskrats, field mice), even chickens. Its thick fur protects it from stings, it attacks the nests of bumblebees, hornets and termites. In summer and autumn, it favors corn, fruits, berries, acorns and nuts. It sometimes eats carrion.
Not very shy, he ventures into towns and searches through trash cans, which he easily opens with his nimble little fingers.
The popular belief that the Raccoon washes its food before consuming it comes from the fact that it generally feeds on small aquatic animals and often rubs its food between its hands as if to knead it. His hands, which are very mobile, are equipped with numerous nerve endings which function optimally in a humid environment and it is thanks to this exceptional sense of touch that he is able to determine, even without seeing it, whether the object he is it holds is edible or not.
Could we say that he tastes with his hands?
