Tarsiers are among the many animals that appear in the Jungle Bunch Universe

Description[]

Horsfield's Tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus), also known as the western tarsier, is the only species of tarsier in the genus Cephalopachus. It occurs on Borneo, Sumatra and nearby islands and is, like other members of the group, entirely nocturnal. Tarsiers are great jumpers and can leap very far through the trees. They have a huge tarsus and tarsal bone, which is how they got their name. They also have eyes bigger than their brains. If a human had eyes that big, they'd be a big as grapefruits. The tarsier's eyes are so big, they can't move them around in the sockets, so they've evolved neck vertebrae that allow them to turn their neck completely backwards like an owl.

Social Characteristics[]

Unlike most nocturnal creatures, tarsiers and other nocturnal primates have relatively recently evolved to be nocturnal. As a result, they haven't evolved a tapetum lucidum yet, so they don't create eye shine at night, while other nocturnal creatures like Fossas and Ocelots. That's why they've evolved bigger eyes than most nocturnal animals. Tarsiers also have very profound hearing. Their large ears can pick up frequencies that humans can't hear. This lets them hear the faint noises made by their prey. Tarsiers are the only carnivorous primates, eating prey like birds, insects, rodents, snakes, bats, lizards, and eggs. They'll even work as a troop to mob and fend of predators like brown tree snakes and pythons.
